Do you want more vitality and energy in your life? Why not try Qigong!
Dr. Bruce Eichelberger, OMD of Reno Alternative Medicine says that movement produces energy and vitality which produces relaxation.
“If you want to be healthy and live to one hundred, do qigong.” ~ Dr. Mehmet Oz
The best care is self care.
This means everything from how you eat to your spiritual practice. It includes your relationships, your work and how you move. Nobody will take better care of you in any of these areas than you will.
In today’s article, I want to focus on how you can improve your health through movement. In particular, the movement called qigong.
What does this strange-looking word mean?
Qigong is a powerful Chinese movement practice. The quote above from Dr. Oz is a nice summary.
The practice has 4 central elements. These are the secrets to its power. I’m going to give you all 4 secrets later in this article.
The actual word itself has two parts. The first is qi. It is pronounced “chee” and refers to vital energy or just vitality. The second part is gong. Gong means to cultivate or strengthen.
Put together, qigong means “cultivate vitality”.
When seen from the outside, qigong looks deceptively simple. The movements are mostly slow and relaxed. So is the breathing. A person’s face doing qigong looks relaxed and calm.
But on the inside, things are happening. Your body is relaxing, which improves your immune system and lowers stress. Your mind has a relaxed focus, which helps you think more clearly.
You start to feel a gentle tingling, especially in your hands. Often you feel it all through your body. That tingling is the feeling of vital energy flowing. And before you are done, you have more energy than you did.
If you practice in the morning, you feel more energy. Oddly, if you practice before bed, you usually sleep much better. Qigong balances you in whatever way you need. Pretty amazing, no?
Okay, as promised, I’m going to give you the secret to why qigong works. My original teacher, Grandmaster Share K. Lew, told me this 43 years ago. He also said that the secret is always given at the beginning. Of course it takes a while to master it, but at least you know what you’re going for.
Ready? Here it is…
Yes, I know it seems far to simple. But when you align all of these four things, magic happens. There are, of course, details to each of these. I’ll go further into them in another article.
FYI, I will be teaching a powerful set of qigong exercises in Reno, starting May 7th. This will be a 6-week course. We will meet Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00. Even though these exercises are powerful, they are not strenuous. I’ve taught them to elite athletes as well as people in wheelchairs. And you get the benefit in less than 15 minutes a day.
