Curiously, the way to practice “mind” in qigong is to stop thinking and become aware.

The second of the 4 secrets of Qigong is, “Mind”.

Last time you learned the first secret, “Eyes”.

And as you saw, eyes are directly related to attention. Eyes direct attention. And, of course, attention is related to mind. “Mind” is the second secret of qigong.

But what is different about attention and mind? It has to do with presence.

What this means is that while doing your qigong – or anything – it is ideal to be present.

That means not thinking about the future. Also, not thinking about the past. And, not thinking about things somewhere else. If you find yourself wondering about your Uncle Bob in Walla Walla, you aren’t being present here and now.

For most people, the act of being present is a relatively new experience. It is a kind of inner stillness. This stillness isn’t the external stillness of not moving, it is a quiet mind. That means you can’t think your way into it.

BuddhaAs Eckhart Tolle says, “To be still is to be conscious without thought.” And even though most qigong exercises involve movement, there is a stillness within the movement. That stillness is mind.

So how do you get to this stillness of mind? There are any number of ways. One is embodied in these 4 secrets of qigong. When practiced, you will saturate your awareness with sensory perceptions. And since at most, you can be aware of 9 things at a time, it doesn’t take long to be aware of enough sensory input to silence your mind.

As psychotherapist, Fritz Perls famously said, “Lose your mind and come to your senses.” Curiously, the way to practice “mind” in qigong is to stop thinking and become aware.
